Student govt in solidarity for Marawi

Amidst the ongoing clash between the Maute Group and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) in Marawi City leaving Mindanaoans in grief and terror, the Xavier University – Central Student Government (CSG), in response to the crisis, has partnered with XU in running a donation drive and repacking relief goods for the evacuees in Lanao del Sur province and Iligan City.

XU (Ateneo de Cagayan) has launched “Tabang Marawi” Relief and Response Command Center, involving community members as organizers and volunteers.

“Tabang Marawi,” a volunteer movement that started last May 27, aims to provide relief goods for the Marawi City evacuees who are displaced in the established Regional Coordinating Centers and evacuation centers in Iligan City National High School, Buru-on, and Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT).

Xavier Ateneo’s Social Development Office and XU Central Government are manning the relief operation at the XU Peace Park.

Volunteerism is overwhelming

As of 29 May 2017, XU has more than 160 volunteers today including seven Muslim students, Xavier Ateneo Senior High School students, and a reinforcement team from the Philippine National Police (PNP). CSG is also taking a big chunk of the responsibility in heading the relief operation committees.

Food packs have been transported to various relief and evacuation centers in Iligan and other neighboring areas the same day. One thousand food packs were allocated for those in Marawi; the rest were allocated to evacuation centers in Iligan, 400 of which will be received and distributed in the Balo-i evacuation center by its local partner – the extension office of Iligan Medical Center College.

Farina Roa, a volunteer, described her volunteer stint, “It’s a Saturday on summer. Yet volunteers here packing 1,500 packs at the minimum for evacuees in Iligan. It’s overwhelming.”

Meanwhile, the XU-CSG Department of Social Involvement is in need of volunteers for packing relief goods in line with XU’s relief operation for those affected by the Marawi clash. To those who wish to help, click/tap this link: bit.ly/2qmPCEn

They will notify them through text message prior to the schedule of packing relief goods.

In a statement on Marawi and Martial Law, Ateneo presidents say that in this month of Ramadan, we pray with our Muslim brothers and sisters for God to show us the way to lasting peace. And we pledge our support to our brothers and sisters of Marawi, for all that they will need to rebuild their beautiful city. (EOR/PIA10)
